Health Equity Leadership Project/Program

The focus of course his has been on ensuring that students understand themselves, their personalities and the traits necessary to be an effective & transformational leader. The students have studied notable transformational leaders and have analyzed how advanced-level nurse leaders have used evidence-based practice projects to impact care and outcomes in a variety of complex health care settings.  The students have worked on these assignments in teams and have studied team dynamics as they identified transformational changes in advanced-level practice.

This module focuses on what the nursing profession will need from its leaders over the 5-10 years.  According to The Future of Nursing 2020-2030 Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity Consensus Report indicates that the decade ahead will test the nation’s nurses in new and complex ways. The decade ahead will demand a stronger, more diversified nursing workforce that is well-educated and competent to provide care, promote health and well-being among nurses, individuals, and communities and most importantly address the systemic inequities that fueled wider and persistent health disparities. The report envisions a major role for all nurses in engaging in the complex work of aligning public health, health care, socials services and public policies to eliminate health disparities and implement public policies that eliminate health disparities and achieve health equity. Students will explore ideas: leadership styles and competencies that are needed for nurses to play a role in achieving health equity, lessons from transformational leaders that may be applied to the complex health system to achieve health equity, interpreting EB literature on health equity, or team characteristics that will lead the change to health equity.
