It was a delight to welcome and host SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr. last week for his first visit to Downstate, where he met students, faculty, and staff and toured the campus and UHD. Chancellor King’s visit to Downstate was the official mid-point of his 64-campus tour; we were No. 32.

Eric Corngold, SUNY Trustee, joined Chancellor King; Valerie Grey, Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Health & Hospital Affairs and Chief Hospital and Healthcare Operations Officer; and New York City Councilmember Rita Joseph, Chair of the Education committee and a member of the Committee on Hospitals.

The Chancellor had lunch with students who shared their experiences and discussed Downstate’s impact on their academic and clinical journeys. After that, he met with the faculty to learn about their work.

After being greeted by UHD chief executive officer David H. Berger, M.D., MHCM, FACS, Patricia A. Winston, DNP, MS, RN, Senior Vice President, and Chief Operating Officer, and Cheryl Rolston, MA, Chief Nursing Officer, we embarked on a UHD tour that included the NICU unit, X-Ray Room 5, the new Cath Lab, Radiology Unit, and an introduction to the daily huddle boards.

Chancellor King later visited the College of Nursing Simulation Lab and was greeted by Marie-Claire Roberts, Ph.D., MS., MPA, RN, Associate Dean for Research and Evaluation, and Catherine Hagerty, Ph.D., RN, Clinical Associate Professor, and Director of Academic Innovation. He visited and toured the Student Center, where he was welcomed by Jeffrey Putman, Ed.D., Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs, R. Schuyler Hooke, Student Life Department Director, and Adam Burgman, M. Ed., Student Union Director.
