Meet the New Daniel Hale Williams Society Board Leaders

Daniel Hale Williams Society (DHWS) is a chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) that supports current and future underrepresented medical students. Their mission is to address the needs of underserved communities and increase the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent, and socially conscious physicians and surgeons. 

I am proud to acknowledge the new Daniel Hale Willams Society board members who took office in December for one-year terms of service. Dr. Daniel Hale Williams was the first African American cardiologist to performed the first successful open-heart surgery, the first surgeon to perform open-heart surgery on a human, founded the Provident Hospital and Training School, created two hospital-based training programs for nursing, was a co-founder of the National Medical Association, and the first African American physician admitted to the American College of Surgeons.

We are proud of our students as they willingly take on leadership roles to support and grow the number of underrepresented medical students. And, a hearty thank you to Faculty Advisor Ramon E. Gist, M.D., FAAP, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Director, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.
