COM Student Wins PSSF Medical Scholars Research Fellowship

By Office of the President | Apr 3, 2023

David CanoCongratulations to David Cano, M.Sc., medical student, College of Medicine Class of 2025, one of only five physician-scientist students nationwide to be offered the prestigious Physician-Scientist Support Foundation Medical Scholars Research Fellowship for 2023-2024. Not only is David among a small group of PSSF recipients, but he is also a member of the inaugural Medical Scholars Research Fellowship (MSRF) class and intends to pursue his love of medicine and science as a physician-scientist.

The PSSF Medical Scholars Research Fellowship (MSRF) provides research opportunities and mentoring to students who aspire to become physician-scientists and are dedicated to making fundamental discoveries to improve health. The fellowship supports one year of mentored, rigorous research training in fundamental biomedical research. The fellowship is for a full-time research with a stipend of $42,000. In addition to the stipend, the award includes an allowance of $8,000 for health insurance and travel expenses.

I extend Downstate’s gratitude to Todd C. Sacktor, M.D., SUNY Distinguished Professor, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, who serves as David’s mentor.

Congratulations, David! We have no doubt we will hear about many more successes in the future.
