New Chief of Hematology/Oncology Joins Downstate

By Office of the President | Apr 3, 2023

Kevin BeckerFollowing the February announcement of our partnership between Downstate and Maimonides to expand access to cancer care in Central Brooklyn, we are delighted to formally welcome Kevin Becker, M.D., as Downstate’s new chief in the Division of Hematology/Oncology. Dr. Becker will serve as chief to grow both programs at Downstate and Maimonides while creating the necessary collaborations and integrations to bring the best care to our patients.

The new Regional Division of Hematology and Oncology will realize a unified faculty group providing the best clinical cancer care in Brooklyn across multiple sites. We will leverage the academic resources of Downstate’s College of Medicine to promote cancer research focused on the population in Brooklyn and access to clinical trials. Regional, cancer-specific tumor boards will be a cornerstone of the collaboration, allowing patients to benefit from the combined clinical expertise of both institutions while promoting academic discourse among faculty and trainees. The ultimate goal is to grow and develop both institutions’ cancer programs to benefit their respective communities.

Dr. Becker completed medical school, an Internal Medicine residency, and Hematology/Oncology fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center before joining Maimonides in 2010. His clinical interests include thoracic and genitourinary malignancies. Dr. Becker completed the Master of Medical Management program at Carnegie Mellon University in 2020 and the Northwell Health Physician Leadership Development Program in 2021.

I thank Moro Salifu, M.D., David Berger, M.D., Patricia Winston, DNP, MS, RN, and Lori Donnell, MBA, for their leadership in this critical partnership.
