SUNY Downstate Team Makes Strides Against Breast Cancer

Nov 18, 2010

October 17 is being called "Super Sunday" because of the record number of supporters who turned out for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University was the local flagship sponsor of the walk held in Brooklyn.

More than 200 members of SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, with their families and friends, marched under the Downstate banner in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. They were greeted by Borough President Marty Markowitz and other local supporters.

Downstate has been a flagship sponsor of the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk for the past four years. Its University Hospital at Downstate has been recognized by the American Cancer Society as the top fund-raising hospital in Brooklyn for three years in a row. So far this year, the Downstate Team has raised over $23,000 and aims to reach its goal of $30,000 by year’s end. In the past decade, the American Cancer Society has supported basic science research at SUNY Downstate in the amount of almost $1.5 million.
