SUNY Downstate to Educate Youth about Health, May 7

May 5, 2010

SUNY Downstate Medical Center's 5th annual Dine & Learn Healthy Youth Symposium – this year titled “R U Serious? Teen Health Really Matters!” – will take place Friday, May 7, 2009, from 4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at Midwood High School at Brooklyn College, 2839 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, 11210 (between Campus and Glenwood Roads).

As part of HIV/AIDS education, which focuses on raising awareness about the advantages of delaying sexual activities and the benefits of practicing safer sex, Brazilian artist Adriana Bertini will present a fashion show with dresses she has made from condoms. Her creations recently were featured on WNBC-TV. Rapid HIV testing and counseling and non-invasive screenings for sexually transmitted diseases will also be available.

Physicians from SUNY Downstate Medical Center and other experts will offer talks on a variety of health topics and violence prevention. Young people age 13 and older are invited but those between 13 and 17 must have consent forms signed by a parent or guardian.

Exhibitors and organizations will be on hand to offer youth health information and other support services in the areas of education/career development, fitness/weight loss, nutrition, finance, mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence, managed care, skin, hair and dental care, and youth empowerment.

Beat, rap, dance, and “Stomp Out AIDS” performances are also part of the program, with music by E/NYCE and JSTARR.

Dinner will be served and gift bags will be distributed to each young person as a token of appreciation for his or her participation. Some participants will also win prizes (gift cards, certificates and coupons) during question-and-answer sessions.
