Celebrating Pride Month

June marks Pride Month, a global celebration honoring the rich history, resilience, and achievements of the LGBTQIA+ community. It is a time to reflect on the ongoing journey toward equity and fairness, while reaffirming our shared commitment to fostering a culture of inclusion and belonging within and beyond the workplace.
At Downstate, we recognize the vital contributions LGBTQIA+ individuals make to healthcare, education, research, and society. We are proud of the work being done through our STAR Program, which has evolved over the past three decades to meet the changing needs of diverse communities. What began as a response to the HIV/AIDS crisis has grown into a comprehensive program offering services in areas such as mental health, hepatitis C treatment, and care tailored to LGBTQIA+ populations. STAR continues to serve as a beacon of innovation, compassion, advocacy, and equitable care.
We also celebrate the enduring legacy of LGBTQIA+ leaders across the SUNY system, including Harvey Milk, a 1951 graduate of the University at Albany, whose courage and activism continue to inspire generations. As one of the nation’s first openly gay elected officials and a key figure in commissioning the original Pride flag, Milk’s legacy remains a powerful symbol of hope, visibility, and progress.
At Downstate and throughout SUNY, we remain committed to cultivating a welcoming and inclusive environment where every individual feels seen, heard, respected, and valued. This Pride Month, we celebrate the progress that has been made and recommit ourselves to building a more inclusive future for all.
This year, we proudly spotlight R. Schuyler Hooke, Director, Department of Student Life, as a shining example of service and allyship within our community as Downstate continues to #KeepCareClose for all. Schuyler’s dedication and leadership reflect the spirit of PRIDE, uplifting others through authenticity, support, and visibility.
