Honoring Caribbean American Heritage Month
By Office of Communications & Marketing | Jun 2, 2026
Each June, we celebrate Caribbean American Heritage Month, a time to recognize and honor the remarkable contributions of Caribbean people and their descendants to the history, culture, and progress of the United States.
This observance was first nationally celebrated in 2000 through the efforts of the Institute of Caribbean Studies, founded by Dr. Claire Nelson, and was formally established through a 2004 congressional bill introduced by Congresswoman Barbara Lee.
As we recognize Caribbean American Heritage Month, we celebrate the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of the Caribbean community at SUNY Downstate. Our students, faculty, staff, and volunteers of Caribbean heritage help shape who we are through their talent, dedication, and leadership. Their contributions strengthen our institution and support our mission to #KeepCareClose for the communities we serve.
This month, we are pleased to spotlight Marcia Gordon, affectionately known throughout Downstate as Ms. Marcie. As Retail Operations Manager for Sodexo Food Services, Ms. Marcie embodies the warmth, hospitality, and spirit of service that are hallmarks of Caribbean culture. Proud of her Jamaican roots, she has spent more than two decades helping to ensure that patients, visitors, and colleagues feel welcomed, cared for, and valued. Through her leadership, compassion, and commitment to excellence, Ms. Marcie represents the very best of the Downstate community and the vibrant Caribbean heritage that enriches our campus every day.
