Acknowledging World AIDS Day

By Office of Communications & Marketing | Nov 26, 2025

On World AIDS Day, December 1, 2025, the STAR Program honors all those affected by HIV and reaffirms our commitment to compassionate, equitable care. This year’s UNAIDS theme—“Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response”—feels especially relevant amid funding uncertainties, policy shifts, and a rising climate of stigma that affects our community. Despite challenging times, STAR remains steadfast: rethinking how we deliver care, rebuilding trust with our partners, and rising with our patients to keep prevention, treatment, and support strong in Central Brooklyn. Together, we continue to build an HIV response rooted in resilience, dignity, and hope.

In honor of World AIDS Day, the THEO (Teens Helping Each Other) Program and other STAR team members will be hosting resource tables on Monday, December 1st, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM in the SUNY Downstate atrium, near 395 Lenox Rd. This collaborative event aims to raise awareness about Ending the HIV Epidemic, promote accessible prevention, and help break the stigma surrounding HIV. Together, we can overcome disruption and transform the AIDS response by staying informed, challenging stigma, and supporting equitable, community-centered HIV care. We invite all staff, students, and community members to stop by, learn more, and show support for ongoing efforts to build a healthier and more informed community.

In addition, the STAR Program Survivors’ Quilt will be on display in the atrium during the HEAT Program’s World AIDS Day Symposium: HEAT’s Legacy of Healing and Hope on Friday, December 5, 2025, from 3:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Created by STAR patients and first assembled more than ten years ago, the Survivors’ Quilt has recently been updated by STAR patients and staff. Members of the Downstate community are invited to view this meaningful piece of our shared history as part of the day’s observance at the HEAT Program's event.
