Native American Heritage Month

This November, we proudly join the nation in celebrating Native American Heritage Month, a time to honor the profound contributions, rich cultures, and enduring resilience of the First Peoples of this land. Their legacies continue to guide us toward a deeper understanding of community, balance, and collective well-being.

Our campus is situated on the traditional homelands of the Lenape people, one of several nations. One of them is the Canarsee, a local Lenape band that once thrived across what is now Brooklyn and Long Island. Their stewardship shaped this region long before it became a city, and their walking paths helped define today’s major avenues, including Flatbush, Atlantic, and Fulton Street, highlighting the interconnectedness of our histories.

We honor the healing traditions of Indigenous peoples, who were among the first physicians, caregivers, and stewards of holistic wellness. These practices recognized the interdependence of body, spirit, and environment, promoting health equity, educating future caregivers, and serving communities with compassion and cultural understanding.

This year’s observance challenges us to move toward reflection and action, learn from Indigenous resilience, amplify Native voices in medicine and public health, and confront the ongoing inequities that many communities still face in accessing care, representation, and opportunities.

By learning from the first healers and stewards of this land, we reaffirm our commitment to inclusion, justice, and shared humanity. In honoring Native American Heritage Month, we strengthen the values that define who we are and what we stand for.
