Interim Chief of Surgical Oncology Appointed

Sumanth C. Suresh, M.D., FACS, has been appointed interim chief of the newly formed Division of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Suresh, who joined Downstate in 2019, assumes this role following his leadership within the Divisions of General and Transplant Surgery. As a specialist in gastrointestinal, heptopancreatobiliary, and transplant surgery, Dr. Suresh has applied his unique clinical background to expand the field of Surgical Oncology at Downstate. He has established strong collaborative relationships between medical oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, and community physicians. He leads a weekly multidisciplinary tumor board that facilitates high-quality care for cancer patients.

The Division of Surgical Oncology at Downstate will offer the full spectrum of surgical services covering a variety of oncologic pathologies, including benign and malignant hepatobiliary cancers, pancreatic malignancies, gastrointestinal and colorectal cancers, endocrine lesions, and breast pathologies.
