Downstate Professor Elected President of the American Psychiatric Association

Dr. Viswanathan’s term as president-elect begins in May 2023; he assumes the role of APA president from May 2024 through May 2025.

Dr. Viswanathan is the first person from Brooklyn in Downstate’s history to be elected to this position; he is also the third person of color to be elected president since the organization’s inception in 1844—178 years ago!

APA is the world’s largest psychiatric association and has more than 37,000 members, and is the main body of psychiatry in the United States.
