The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Guidelines Task Force of the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) has released guidelines and best practices for inclusivity in educational materials. Obstetrics and Gynecology Professor and Chair, Camille Clare, M.D., MPH, is one of 11 members appointed to the Task Force, including experts from across the country.

APGO’s new guidelines address the systemic racism that continues to impact health outcomes. They are also meant to prepare, recruit, and retain a talented and diverse physician workforce. Though written specifically for those in Obstetrics and Gynecology, the standards can be used widely by medical educators in all specialties. They are broad in scope and full of valuable and specific suggestions to increase diversity, foster inclusivity, and eliminate bias and stereotypes.

APGO leadership will review all existing educational resources, products, and environments using these Task Force Guidelines and standards to guide the development of new materials in four domains: organizational vitality, education and scholarship, climate and culture, and recruitment and retention.

APGO, which represents academic OB/GYNs in the US and Canada, offers teaching tools for physician-educators and learning mechanisms for faculty, students, and residents to provide optimum health care to women.

The guidelines can be found in a Special Report published in the September 14 issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
