SUNY DOWNSTATE STUDENTS WINNERS OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS VERSION OF JEOPARDY
Oct 16, 2006
The competition was no match for the five SUNY Downstate medical students who soundly
defeated other medical students from schools in the northeast in a game of medical
jeopardy.
Students from 12 northeast medical schools including Ivy League universities such
as Brown, Cornell, Harvard, and Yale were no match for SUNY Downstate’s Susan Bard,
Katy Burris, David Jang, Edward Monk, and Genri Pinkhasov at the Eighth Annual Northeast
Regional American College of Physicians (ACP) Medical Board Review Tournament. The
Downstate team showed their academic prowess early as they routed their first round
opponents by a margin of more than 300 points.
In the final round SUNY Downstate squared off against the University of Connecticut
and New York University. Downstate picked up the pace after a slow beginning to the
round. The three teams were within several points of each other when the final question
concerning alternative medicine was asked. It was a matching exercise where the contestants
were given the names of six holistic medicines and six side effects. The teams then
had to identify which medicine produced what side effect.
Thanks to Downstate’s Essentials of Clinical Medicine course Downstate’s team was
well prepared for the question. Downstate clinched the match and the tournament, sending
the competition home quietly.
SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is located at 450 Clarkson Avenue and is
the only academic medical center in Brooklyn.
