CENTRAL BROOKLYN HOSPITALS HOLDING DISASTER EXERCISE

SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University will hold the largest disaster drill performed
by an academic medical center or teaching hospital ever in New York City on Sunday,
December 10, 2006, from 10:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in East Flatbush, Brooklyn.
The staffs of four hospitals will care for more than 150 volunteers pretending to
be victims of the mock disaster, many brought to the site by ambulance. The drill
will begin with a reported explosion of unknown origin in the vicinity, with triage
at sites between 395 and 445 Lenox Road.
New York City Emergency Medical Services and the police and fire departments will
participate in the exercise, which is cosponsored by Kings County Hospital Center,
Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, and Kingsboro State Psychiatric Center.
SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University has been the leader in hospital disaster
preparedness in the City. Dr. Bonnie Arquilla is assistant professor of emergency
medicine and the director of disaster preparedness at SUNY Downstate/Kings County
Medical Center.
