SUNY DOWNSTATE Names New Dean of Medicine

Jun 22, 2006

Ian L. Taylor, M.D., Ph.D., has been named senior vice president for biomedical education and research and dean of the College of Medicine at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn, it was announced today by John C. LaRosa, M.D., president of SUNY Downstate. The appointment will become effective September 1, 2006.
“We are indeed fortunate to have recruited a person of Dr. Taylor’s stature to Downstate,” said President LaRosa. “He will be a key leader in our continued growth and I look forward very much to working with him.” Addressing the Downstate campus, Dr. LaRosa added, “I know you will welcome him enthusiastically.”
Dr. Taylor will be responsible for all aspects of medical education in the College of Medicine, including all undergraduate, GME and CME programs and their academic affiliations.  In addition, he will have primary responsibility for the research enterprise in all four colleges that currently make up SUNY Downstate.
Dr. Taylor comes to Downstate with a distinguished record of accomplishment in medical education, patient care, research and academic administration at the senior level. A native of Liverpool, England and a graduate of the medical school there, he most recently was associate senior vice president for health sciences and dean of the School of Medicine at Tulane University.  Prior to that, he was chairman of the Department of Medicine and president of the University Medical Associates at the Medical University of South Carolina, and before that director of the Division of Gastroenterology at Duke University.  He has been actively involved in both basic and clinical research for most of his career in the United States, beginning at the University of California at Los Angeles.
In his new position, Dr. Taylor succeeds Eugene B. Feigelson, M.D., who is stepping down as senior vice president for biomedical research and education and dean of the College of Medicine. In Dr. Feigelson’s 27 years at Downstate, he has also served as professor and chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and as interim president. In order to effect a seamless transition of this important senior leadership position, Dr. Feigelson has graciously agreed to stay on as dean until August 31, 2006.
The selection of Dr. Taylor is the result of a national search conducted with the assistance of an executive search firm with extensive experience working with academic medical centers.
