SUNY Downstate Chinese New Year event attracts 300 people
The year of the dog has arrived.
The SUNY Downstate Chinese Cultural Committee, a division of the Cultural Diversity Program Committee, held a Chinese New Year’s celebration, Tuesday, January 31 in the Alumni Auditorium. Almost 300 people from the Downstate campus and community attended were treated to educational displays and a parade of traditional dress and fashions from different parts of China, as well as music and cultural performances.
Honored guests included representatives of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China Education Office. Among them were Counselor Fanglin Ai and Consuls Fenghe Qiao and Changxue Yu, as well as calligrapher Ming Guan from the Consulate’s Culture Section. Delegates from Brooklyn’s Chinese-American community also attended.
Downstate’s Dr. Tsai Chao, director of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine’s Residency Program, gave the keynote address on the benefits of acupuncture.
“It was a fantastic event,” said Debra D. Carey, chief executive officer of Downstate’s University Hospital at Downstate. “The Chinese Cultural Committee has advanced significantly our program to promote our institution’s diverse cultural heritage.”
SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is Brooklyn’s only academic medical center. Located at 450 Clarkson Avenue, it serves more than 2 million people throughout the borough.
