Celebrating 250 years of our Independence
By Office of Communications & Marketing | Jul 2, 2026
Independence Day commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, when the American colonies declared their independence from the British Empire and set in motion the founding of a nation built on the enduring ideals of liberty, equality, and self-government. This weekend, we will commemorate the 250th anniversary of that historic moment.
This milestone was so significant that the very first Fourth of July celebrations were held the following year, in 1777, during the height of the Revolutionary War. At that time, those celebrating did not yet know what the outcome of the struggle for independence would be. Yet the pursuit of liberty itself was reason enough to come together in hope and celebration.
As our nation prepares to mark 250 years of history, this Independence Day offers an opportunity to reflect not only on our past but also on the enduring ideals that have guided generations of Americans, the freedoms proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence, and the principles of liberty, justice, and representative government embodied in the U.S. Constitution. These ideals continue to inspire our shared commitment to one another and to the communities we serve.
In celebration of the 250th anniversary, a limited number of 250th Commemorative flags is available on a first-come, first-served basis. We invite you to visit the Office of Communications & Marketing in BSB-1-101 to pick one up on Thursday, July 2 (TODAY), between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
*Because of a limited supply, only one flag will be issued per person.
As we gather this holiday weekend with family, friends, and neighbors for barbecues, parties, and fireworks, let us also take a moment to appreciate the generations who came before us, the freedoms we cherish today, and the responsibility we all share to build an even stronger future.
Please celebrate responsibly and safely. Thank you for all you do to help #KeepCareClose for every individual in the communities we proudly serve.
Wishing you and your loved ones a safe, happy, and memorable Fourth of July!
