Celebrating Our University Police on Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

On January 9, we proudly honor and celebrate our law enforcement professionals for their dedication, courage, and tireless service in safeguarding our communities. Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, established in 2015 by organizations such as Concerns of Police Survivors, reminds us of the importance of expressing gratitude and support for officers who protect and serve across the United States.

At Downstate, our University Police Department (UPD) plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of our college and hospital community. Their presence is essential in an environment where education, research, and healthcare intersect every day. Whether maintaining a secure campus for students and faculty, protecting patients and staff in our medical facilities, or responding to emergencies with professionalism and compassion, UPD’s work is integral to our mission.

Beyond safety and security, our law enforcement officers help foster trust, build meaningful relationships, and create a welcoming and supportive environment where learning and healing can thrive. Their contributions are especially vital in a healthcare and academic setting, where their actions directly impact lives and uphold the highest standards of care and responsibility.

To our University Police officers, we extend our deepest gratitude for your unwavering dedication and vigilance. Your service ensures that everyone at Downstate—students, faculty, staff, patients, and visitors—can feel safe, supported, and protected.

Please join us in recognizing and celebrating our UPD team.

Thank you for all that you do.
