Student Assessment Criteria

Spring 2021 Awards: Open to continuing students who are enrolled during Spring 2021.

Application Deadline

Friday, February 12, 2021 by 12:00 midnight.

Selection committee will begin reviewing applications after Friday, February 12, 2021.

Apply to the Fellowship

The criteria to select awardees for the Lenard and Christine Szarek Fellowship Fund for SUNY Downstate School of Public Health (SPH) Master of Public Health (MPH) and Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) are presented below:

  • Academic Record: Applicants must submit an official transcript. Each applicant must also have completed 12 or more SPH academic credits with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.75 or greater.
  • Resume: Each applicant must submit a recent resume which delineates his or her academic and employment record. Special attention will be given to those applicants who have done research or are engaged in public health activities related to urban and immigrant health.
  • Personal Statement: Each applicant must submit a personal statement of 1,000 words or less in which s/he delineates how the funding will assist him or her. Note that actions related to addressing public health needs related to urban and immigrant health will be given special consideration.
  • Letter of Recommendation: Each applicant must submit a Letter of Recommendation from a faculty member of the SUNY Downstate School of Public Health.

Funds will be disseminated after each add/drop period to ensure awardees maintain matriculation and relevant course registration.
