History of the Downstate DMI Program

The Diagnostic Medical Imaging (DMI) Program was established in 1972 and was the first program of its kind to offer a Bachelor of Science degree, with a major in sonography, in the United States. It has remained a leader in the profession, producing many clinicians and educators that have spread all over the U.S. The Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Students are prepared by the program to take the registry examination given by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

The DMI program is located in the School of Health Professions at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. This is a large academic medical center that serves 2.6 million residents of Brooklyn and Staten Island. The campus includes the School of Health Professions, which offers degrees in six allied health fields, a College of Medicine, a College of Nursing, a School of Graduate Studies, a School of Public Health, and the University Hospital of Brooklyn. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

While students benefit from the dynamic exchange of ideas that is part of being at a large academic complex, classes in the program are intimate and feature close interactions between students and teachers.
