The Department of Surgery at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is dedicated to providing outstanding education of physicians, scientists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Our mission is to care for and improve the lives of our globally diverse communities, and to foster an environment that embraces cultural diversity, excellence, and patient-centered healthcare delivery.

Our vision is to be nationally recognized for improving human lives by providing outstanding education for healthcare professionals, advancing research in biomedical science, health care, and public health, while delivering the highest quality patient-centered care. The goal of the general surgery residency program is to train surgeons within this framework.
