Letter from the Program Director
Welcome to The Children's Hospital at SUNY Downstate Pediatric Residency Program website. Thank you for your interest in our program. We are proud to be a residency program with a long history of training excellent pediatricians. The Department of Pediatrics seeks to advance the profession of Pediatrics through excellence in education, clinical care, research and scholarly activities, and community service. We serve a patient population which includes recent immigrants from a diverse ethnic background which provides exposure to a variety of disease processes as well as conditions.
The residency training program of the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center carries a full accreditation with commendation by the ACGME. We are proud to be the only academic teaching medical center in Brooklyn. The important elements of our training program include the richness and variety of the patient population, the academic strength of the clinical faculty, and their dedication to the educational program of the residents. Our residents have the opportunity to experience their training at four hospital sites.
The Children's Hospital at Downstate at UHB is a referral center for a broad range of pediatric subspecialty services, and is designated as a Level II Regional Perinatal Center and NYS Endocrine Center. UHB also provides general pediatric care to the community of middle class patients in the East Flatbush area.
Kings County Hospital Center (KCHC) is a large renowned municipal hospital which serves as the primary care facility for roughly 2O% of the borough of Brooklyn, a city of 2.6 million inhabitants within the City of New York. In addition, KCHC is a Level I trauma center in Brooklyn and receives acute care referrals from other Brooklyn institutions.KCHC also serves as an international referral center for families from the Caribbean, Central and South America, Africa, Middle East and Asia.
South Brooklyn Health (Formerly Coney Island Hospital) serves a culturally diverse urban population comprised of varied socioeconomic classes. This diversity allows for a breadth of patient care experience. There is a large ambulatory patient population which crosses all age groups. The hospital sits in a middle-class neighborhood in Brooklyn. CIH is a safety net hospital for those community residents lacking other access to health care.
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) is an internationally renowned oncology referral center, located in Manhattan. As the world's oldest and largest private cancer center, MSK is uniquely equipped to care for children, adolescents, and young adults with all types of cancer, from the most common to the rarest.
The mission of our residency program is to train pediatricians who will serve as leaders in their profession and communities as well advocate for the needs of children and their families with an emphasis on health, educational, and social issues encountered in the urban, under-served communities.
Our goal is to provide every resident with a broad and excellent foundation in general pediatrics. The resident's experience includes extensive clinical interaction with diverse patient populations, direct patient care and the management of diseases ranging from common to rare etiologies. We emphasize the development of strong clinical decision making skills and autonomy with close faculty support and supervision. Our residents play an integral role in the education of medical students. These exposures and experiences help residents with opportunities to further their training in prestigious academic centers across the country.
