Application Process

PROSPECTIVE APPLICANTS should apply using ERAS – The Electronic Residency Application Service.

Applicants for appointments at SUNY Downstate Medical Center must be graduates of medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or have completed the process for being certified by the ECFMG. Criteria for receiving an interview are:

  • We do not set minimum USMLE scores. USMLE Step 1 must be passed. Test scores are not evaluated in a vacuum; other factors are evaluated including MSPE, class rank or quartile if available, curriculum vitae and personal statements. All applications to the program will be reviewed by the program director and selection committee.
  • No more than 5 years past medical school graduation without any clinical training.

Our program offers 15 categorical positions which include the PGY-1 year and 2–4 CA-1 positions beginning in the PGY-2 year. Students must register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for both first and second-year positions.

Completion of USMLE Step one and two is required before entering the PGY-1 year. Completion of USMLE Step 3 is strongly recommended to be completed before the end of the PGY-1 year; it is University policy that Step 3 be completed before beginning the PGY-3 (CA-2) year.
