Chief Resident’s Message

Dear Prospective Anesthesiology Residents,

On behalf of the Anesthesiology team at Downstate Health Sciences University, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you. We are excited that you are considering our program as the next step in your medical education.

Our Anesthesiology program has a long history of providing exceptional training to residents who have gone on to become leaders in the field. Our program is committed to providing a comprehensive education in all aspects of anesthesiology, including perioperative care, pain medicine, and critical care medicine. In addition to a comprehensive didactic program, our approaches to education include small group and simulation as well as several innovative techniques, which should be able to accommodate the learning style of every learner.

Our residents are given progressive independence throughout their training, which culminates in the CA-3 year, during which they function almost fully independently. We provide our residents with the opportunity to take ownership of their cases, and to develop leadership and communication skills. Our program also emphasizes the use of point-of-care ultrasound in the perioperative setting, allowing our residents to develop a valuable skillset that will serve them throughout their careers.

In addition to our clinical training in New York City, we offer international anesthesia trips to Serbia and the Philippines. These trips provide our residents with a unique opportunity to learn about anesthesia practices in different cultural and resource-limited settings. Our residents return from these trips with a renewed appreciation for the impact of global health on anesthesia practice.

Located in the heart of the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, our program offers three core Hospitals; SUNY’s University Hospital at Downstate, Health and Hospital’s Kings County Hospital,  and One Brooklyn Health’s Brookdale Hospital Medical Center. Our residents have the opportunity to work and learn in a vibrant and diverse community. Brooklyn is a melting pot of cultures, and we are proud to serve patients from all walks of life and all parts of the world. We believe that this diversity enriches the learning experience for our residents and prepares them to provide exceptional care to patients from all backgrounds. Our residents also receive training at several world class affiliate hospitals, including Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

I encourage you to explore our program further and to contact us with any questions you may have. We believe that our Anesthesiology program at Brooklyn Medical Center is an exceptional place to learn and grow as a physician, and we look forward to welcoming you to our community.

Sincerely,

William Barlow, D.O and Sundeep Brar, D.O.
