Didactics & Educational Resources

Morning Report: 30 minutes of daily protected educational time prior to commencement of OR cases; topics include mock oral board style case discussion, ABA keywords, Journal Club, board review questions, or a faculty-led lecture on a topic from the ABA content outline. 

Grand Rounds: every Thursday, a formal, 60-minute presentation on a challenging case report with pertinent scholarly discussion, or Morbidity & Mortality presentation - delivered by a resident to the entire department.

Journal Club: every Wednesday Morning Report session - topics alternate between cardiac, pediatric, obstetrics, neurosurgical, trauma, and regional anesthesia.

Simulation Sessions: For crisis management, regional anesthesia, and point of care ultrasound of airway, cardiovascular system, and respiratory system.

Case-based Discussions: geared towards CA-1s – a faculty member moderates a thorough case discussion with four CA-1 residents with the intention of reviewing basic science concepts underlying clinical management decisions.  Each CA-1 participates in six case-based discussion sessions throughout CA-1 year.   

Small Group Discussions: geared towards CA-2/3s – a faculty member moderates a thorough case discussion with four CA-2/3 residents with the intention of reviewing advanced anesthesia topics by analyzing a complex case.  Each CA-2/3 participates in six case-based discussion sessions throughout CA-2/3 year.  

Mock Oral Examinations/OSCE: CA-3 residents undergo several mock oral examinations with two senior faculty members using questions provided by the American Board of Anesthesiology.  They also participate in a session providing orientation to the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) portion of the APPLIED Examination.

TrueLearn: provided for PGY-1s, CA-1s, CA-2s, and CA-3s – TrueLearn is an online question bank with over 1,000 ABA-style practice questions designed to help residents prepare for the annual In-Training Examination, the Basic Exam taken at the end of CA-1 year, and the Advanced Exam taken at the end of CA-3 year. 

Learnly: provided for CA-1s – a year-long online course intended to help residents master the anesthesia basic sciences by providing daily learning modules which include readings material from textbooks, short videos, and multiple choice and open-ended questions. 

OpenAnesthesia SelfStudyPLUS: provided for CA-3s – OpenAnesthesia SelfStudyPLUS is a personalized online question bank with over 2,000 ABA-style practice questions designed to help CA-3 residents prepare for the Advanced Exam.  This review program utilizes online algorithms to assess the resident’s strengths and weaknesses and tailors the questions to fill the individual’s gaps in knowledge. 

SonoSim: provided for CA-1s, CA-2s, and CA-3s – an online ultrasound training software used during simulation sessions and small group meetings to help residents become more proficient with ultrasound.

AccessAnesthesiology: provided for CA-1s, CA-2s, and CA-3s – AccessAnesthesiology is an online, comprehensive multimedia library that gives residents access to several top anesthesia textbooks, board review questions, TEE resources, simulation videos, and other video lectures.
