University Hospital at Downstate
Planned and built as an integral part of SUNY-Downstate Health Sciences University, this 376 bed facility opened in 1966. As a tertiary care referral center, UHD provides complex care to patients with significant co-morbidities. Our busy surgical services include orthopedic surgery, with a significant volume of spine cases and total joint replacements; robotic surgery for GU and GYN oncologic procedures; pediatric surgery, including neonatal emergencies; and out-of-OR procedures, including GI endoscopy, interventional radiology and pediatric MRI. Residents have exposure to various airway and regional anesthesia techniques. In 2019, the Anesthesiology Department performed 9083 anesthetics in OR and out-of-OR locations, and 2,194 anesthetics in labor and delivery.
Kings County Hospital Center
Kings County Hospital Center is undoubtedly one of the best-known municipal hospitals
in the United States. Established as a one-room infirmary in 1830, the hospital is
operated by the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation. KCHC has an extremely
active trauma service. There is a very busy hepatobiliary surgical service, and residents
obtain experience in the management of hepatic resections and pancreatic surgery.
There is also a strong experience in neurosurgical anesthesia. At KCHC, the senior
resident on call serves as a "Team Captain", and acts as a junior attending, although
they are supervised by a faculty member at all times. There is also a very busy pain
clinic, where residents gain experience in the evaluation and management of chronic
pain problems. 5,891 anesthetics were administered in the operating room in 2019.
Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center
Brookdale Hospital, part of the One Brooklyn Health System, is a Level II trauma center
serving the East New York population. Established in 1931, it currently has 530 beds.
The OR comprises of 12 rooms and 2 endoscopy suites. Anesthesiology also provides
coverage for Labor and Delivery. Residents are exposed to major vascular, thoracic,
neurosurgical and robotic procedures. Brookdale provides a unique experience working
with patients with significant comorbidities. In 2019, 8320 cases were performed in
the OR.
Residents also rotate through Brookdale’s Pain Management Center, learning the multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis, evaluation and management of patients with both acute and chronic pain conditions. Residents will have the opportunity to perform epidural injections and neurolysis procedures.
Downstate Bay Ridge
The Downstate Bay Ridge site provides an outstanding experience in the provision of
anesthesia to ambulatory patients. Particular attention is paid to maintaining efficient
OR throughput, as well as eliminating those factors such as pain, excessive sedation,
and nausea that can delay discharge. There is a very busy pediatric ENT service at
this site. A large number of orthopedic procedures are performed under regional anesthesia.
Staten Island University Hospital
Staten Island University Hospital is a 508-bed community hospital located in the South
Beach neighborhood of Staten Island. Residents rotate through SIUH to gain additional
experience in anesthesia for cardiac surgery. Residents also participate in the management
of patients undergoing major vascular surgery. Transportation costs for residents
assigned to SIUH are covered by a stipend provided by the Department of Anesthesiology.
Mount Sinai Morningside
Formerly known as St Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital/Mount Sinai West, CA-2 residents will
rotate in cardiothoracic anesthesia starting in July 2020. The department provides
the full spectrum of cardiac surgery including coronary artery bypass graft, valve
and robotic surgery.
Mount Sinai Medical Center
A one-month elective rotation in cardiac anesthesia is available to CA-3 residents
who desire additional experience in the management of patients undergoing open heart
surgery. A full range of valve replacements and revascularization procedures are performed,
under cardiopulmonary bypass as well as off-pump. There is opportunity to participate
in the care of pediatric patients with congenital heart disease in the cardiac catheterization
lab.
Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
A six-week elective rotation in neurosurgical and head and neck anesthesiology is
available during the CA-3 year at Memorial Hospital, perhaps the most highly regarded
hospital in the United States dedicated to the care of patients with cancer. Residents
receive an outstanding exposure to intracranial neurosurgery, including awake craniotomies
for functional mapping. During the head and neck portion of the rotation, residents
will gain excellent experience in advanced airways with many patients requiring awake
nasal fiberoptic intubation.
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP)
CHOP is one the largest and oldest children’s hospitals in the United States, ranked
number one in many subspecialties. From August 2020, select CA-3 residents from SUNY
Downstate will have the opportunity to gain invaluable experience in pediatric anesthesia
during a one-month elective. Residents will be fully integrated into the anesthesia
department including on calls to provide an immersive experience.
Accommodation and travel will be covered by the program.
