Online Nursing RN-BS Program

Admissions Requirements

  1. A minimum of 60 semester credits from a college or university institutionally accredited and recognized by the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) such as: the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, the Higher Learning Commission, the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. If you have any questions about whether a transfer course will be accepted, you should check with the Office of Admissions prior to enrolling in the course.
  2. A minimum of 30 semester NUR credits from a college or university institutionally accredited and recognized by the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) such as: the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, the Higher Learning Commission, the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.   3. You must submit one letter of recommendation. SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University has moved toward exclusive use of electronic recommendation submissions. Your letter should be written by a current/former College Science Professor or employer/supervisor, or another college professor. Recommendations by individuals other than your College Professor or Employer/Supervisor will NOT be considered. Please visit the application instructions to learn more about the letter of recommendation requirements.
  4. A valid New York State R.N. license
  5. A preferred undergraduate minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale
  6. A grade of “C” or better in the following prerequisite courses:

Sociology/Anthropology

(Please note the number of credits required) It can be six(6) credits of Sociology OR Anthropology or three(3) credits of each

Psychology Elective 3

Developmental (Lifespan) Psychology

*This requirement must cover from birth through aging. A combination of Child Psychology & Adult Psychology OR Child Psychology & Psychology of Aging will be accepted

In addition to English composition, if any additional humanities or social science courses is writing intensive and described as such in the college catalog, this course will be acceptable to fulfill the English requirement

General Education Requirement:

If appying for entry/ matriculation without a baccaulaureate Degree:

Prior to matriculation, you must have earned a minimum of 33 credits in Liberal Arts and Sciences and 30 credits in at least seven of the ten SUNY-GER subject areas and two required competencies listed  on https://system.suny.edu/academic-affairs/acaproplan/general-education/suny-ge/

Four of the seven Knowledge and Skills areas must be in:

  • Communication: Written and Oral,
  • Diversity: Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice
  • Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning
  • Natural Sciences and Scientific Reasoning

The remaining credits can be obtained in any of the following areas: Humanities, Social Sciences, Arts, US History and Civic Engagement, World History and Global Awareness, and World Languages.

Note: The SUNY-GER is required for all bachelor's degree candidates and the SUNY-GER credits can simultaneously fulfill requirements for LAS.
