We will be nationally recognized for improving peoples’ lives by providing an excellent education for healthcare professionals, for advancing research in biomedical science, healthcare, diversity, health equity and public health, and for delivering the highest quality, patient-family centered care.

Mission Statement

SUNY Downstate College of Medicine is committed to excellence and equity in medical education, biomedical research, clinical care, and community engagement. Our mission is 4-fold:

  • Provide an innovative and integrated medical education that prepares the next generation of socially conscious physicians and scientists to deliver high-quality, compassionate and culturally responsive health care to diverse populations.
  • Conduct innovative research with emphasis on reducing local and global health care disparities.
  • Practice evidence-based, patient-family centered care to improve the health of populations, enhance the patient experience, reduce the cost of care, and pursue health equity.
  • Strengthen our community partnerships to foster engagement and provide opportunities to learn while serving the community.
