SUNY Downstate's IMPACT 2030

IMPACT 2030 is the campus-wide strategic planning process to set priorities for Downstate as an institution.

In early 2020 after finalizing the campus wide strategic plan, implementation was scheduled for the Spring, and the five-year plan was slated to span the years of 2020 to 2025. With the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, implementation was postponed until the campus could adequately refocus its energies back to implementation of the plan. Due to the years lost to this delay, leadership thought it unfair to maintain the same five-year timeframe and extended it to 2030. As a result, the strategic plan has been renamed IMPACT 2030 from IMPACT 2025.

The IMPACT 2030 Strategic Planning process focuses on five distinct areas:

  • Clinical Care
  • Educational Excellence
  • Research and Discovery
  • Downstate and the Community
  • Organizational Culture and Transformation

Workgroups

Starting in the summer of 2018, the planning was grounded in a set of Workgroups, one for each area of focus. Workgroup chairs served on a Steering Committee that synthesized products into draft strategic plans for consideration by Downstate’s Executive Management Committee.

The Workgroups met several times through 2018 and into 2019, involving more than 100 participants. Workgroup participants included clinicians, staff, faculty and students to ensure diverse institutional representation. They gathered data to analyze current conditions and reviewed reports prepared by other groups, including the “Student Government Leadership Strategic Planning Initiative,” the “Rapid Strategic Assessment,” the campus climate survey results from 2017, individual School/College strategic plans and others. The Workgroups assessed Downstate’s current strengths and weaknesses and identified opportunities for growth and change.

Retreat

More than 100 Downstate leaders gathered for a retreat in early 2019 to consider the draft strategies. After the retreat, the Steering Committee reviewed and refined the goals, objectives and tactics for each area.

Implementation

The final IMPACT 2030 Strategic Plan includes 15 goals along with 36 objectives and more than 100 tactics to meet these goals. Given that Downstate cannot accomplish everything at once, implementation will begin in Fall 2022 with the Phase 1 objectives. Phase 2 and Phase 3 objectives will begin 6 months and 12 months later, respectively.

Implementation Chairs

Five Implementation Chairs, one for each of the IMPACT 2030 strategic areas, will assist in developing dashboards for Phases 2 and 3 as well as inform the reporting of progress and measures related to their designated areas.

The implementation leads for the five IMPACT 2030 Strategic Plan areas are:
