Dr. Dale Blackstock Lecture and Award Ceremony 

In celebration of Women's History Month, the Office of Diversity Education and Research sponsors an annual lecture and award ceremony each March to publcly dynamic women for their contributions to Downstate and the surrounding community. 

The program honors the legacy of Dale Blackstock, M.D., internist, nephrologist, geriatrician, and member of the faculty in the Department of Medicine at Downstate in the 1980s and 1990s.

Dr. Samuel L. Kountz Lecture and Award Ceremony

Each February, the Office of Diversity Education and Research sponsors the Samuel L. Kountz, Jr., M.D. Lecture and Award ceremony. The event acknowledges faculty, staff, and other members of our community for their contributions. 

Dr. Kountz was the first Black transplant surgeon in the United States. He was most distinguished for his pioneering work in kidney transplantations, research discoveries and inventions in the field of renal science. Dr. Kountz established the SUNY Downstate Transplant Program in 1965 and served as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery.

Lavender Graduation

Since 2019, the Office of Diversity Education and Research collaborated with faculty and Downstate's PRIDE Club to host an annual graduation ceremony in celebration of the achievements and contributions of Downstate's LGBTQ+ community.
