Welcome to the Office for Institutional Equity
The Office for Institutional Equity (OIE) serves as the central hub for unifying and coordinating diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging initiatives at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. Our goal is to support programs and policies that attract, recruit and retain the most talented and diverse students, trainees, faculty, staff, and administrative leaders. We embrace a broad view of diversity that cuts across, but is not limited to, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, language, culture, socioeconomic background, and life experiences. As a center-wide entity, the OIE works collaboratively across all colleges, schools, and clinical units to foster an inclusive working and learning environment in which all members feel valued and respected.
We support the vision and mission of excellence of SUNY Downstate by:
- Providing trainings, seminars, and workshops on best practices for implementing programs that foster diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
- Ensuring compliance with policies pertaining to discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, equitable hiring and promotion practices, as well as other related areas.
- Creating innovative pathway programs that enable students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in the health sciences to explore and enter health careers.
- Implementing educational programs that provide learners, staff, and faculty with the knowledge, skills, and perspectives needed to tackle structural racism and health inequities.
Fundamental to our continued success, transformation, and growth is the ability to create safe spaces where we respectfully share our voices and collaboratively develop innovative solutions. We will continue to draw upon the expertise and experiences of members at Downstate and the Brooklyn community as we take strategic steps toward advancing equity at SUNY Downstate.
