By Office of the President | May 24, 2023

More than 200 individuals participated in the 6th annual TRANSPORT Symposium, Advancing the Science of Community Engaged Research (CEnR) II, which took place both in person and virtually.

The symposium centered on the science of community-engaged research, featuring a range of topics discussed by panelists. These topics included new models, methods, and frameworks for defining community, collecting data, recruiting and retaining community partners, reducing telehealth disparities, and sparking interest in the field.

The keynote address was delivered by Ezemenari M. Obasi, Ph.D., the Associate Vice President for Research Administration at the University of Houston and Founder/Director of the HEALTH Research Institute. Dr. Obasi highlighted the challenges faced by communities, such as historical maltreatment, chronic disorders, and socioeconomic conditions, and led the audience in exploring community-oriented research methods for achieving health equity and disease prevention.

The symposium also showcased presentations from TRANSPORT Scholars and discussions involving community-based organizations and TRANSPORT Mentors, who shared insights on programming to address health disparities and promote health equity.

The event began with welcome remarks by Kim Council, Deputy Brooklyn Borough President, expressing gratitude to the panelists, guests, and all participants.
