SUNY Council Reconvenes for 2023

By Office of the President | Jan 10, 2023

Last week, I convened the first SUNY Council meeting of the year, sharing an update on the 2022 activities and accomplishments.

I was delighted to share a presentation, some of which is also covered in my 2022 Recap.

Led by chairman of the University Council Chairman, Rev. Dr. Kirkpatrick G. Cohall, senior pastor, Lenox Road Baptist Church, SUNY Downstate Council members—like all members—are appointed by the Governor and serve seven-year terms. Two student members serve a one-year term and are elected on an annual basis by their fellow students.

The Council has broad advisory responsibilities, including review of the budget and all major campus plans. It is also charged with specific regulatory functions in two areas: campus facilities and student life.

Council members are provided with up-to-date information about the University and hospital, seeking their feedback and counsel.

Thanks to our SUNY Council members for their ongoing and dedicated service to SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. Also, a special thanks to Ellen Watson, director of special projects in the Office of Communications & Marketing, for effectively spearheading these meetings regularly and coordinating them.
