Guidance for Use of Controlled Substances in Research Procedures
Principal Investigators (PI) who plan to use controlled substances in research animals must consult the Attending Veterinarian. Principal Investigators (PIs) must obtain separate US Dept. of Justice, Drug Enforcement Division (DEA) registration and NYS Department of Health Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement (NYS BNE) licensure for research involving controlled substances. Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approval must be obtained prior to use of any controlled substance under new and existing animal protocols. It is the responsibility of each PI to maintain appropriate licenses and registration, and to adhere to applicable institutional, state, and federal requirements when working with controlled substances. The IACUC inspects storage areas, usage logs, and security controls semi-annually. Current copies of each license must be submitted to the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S).
