Message from the Chairman

Christopher Roman (Román), Ph.D.
Associate Professor and Chair
Welcome to the Department of Cell Biology! We are a dynamic, multidisciplinary basic science department in the College of Medicine (COM) lead by internationally known faculty with a diverse research portfolio that focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying human health and disease. Our research areas span a wide range of biological systems, including lipid and carbohydrate metabolism and cardiovascular disease, mechanisms of protein translation and viral host evasion, immune responses and autoimmune inflammatory diseases, diffusion properties of the brain intercellular space, the genetics and epigenetics of psychiatric illnesses, organ system development, and cancer. We have rich collaborations across clinical divisions and with scientists in the Biotechnology Incubator.
Additional areas of rigorous scholarly inquiry and research include the evolution of cranial anatomy and medical education. Our faculty are responsible for delivering the preclinical Foundations curriculum in the COM, including the Gross Anatomy, Histology, and Neuroanatomy labs, lectures, and the facilitation of small group discussions. We also teach foundational classes in the School of Health Professions, and in biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, and genetics in the School of Graduate Studies.
