Downstate Fellow Selected for Young Scientist Honor

Brooklyn, NY - Andrey Pisarev, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, has been selected as a finalist for the 2008 New York Academy of Sciences’ Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists. Established in 2007, the awards recognize the most promising young scientists and engineers in the tri-state area.

Nominated in the postdoctoral category for his research in cell and molecular biology, Dr Pisarev has been working in the laboratory of Dr. Tatyana Pestova. He is one of seven scientists selected from a group of 47 at 15 institutions nationwide. As a finalist, Dr. Pisarev will receive a cash prize of $5,000.

“To be a finalist for the 2008 New York Academy of Sciences Blavatnik Awards means a lot for me,” said Dr. Pisarev. “Firstly, I realize that I do real science which is recognized by my colleagues. Secondly, it inspires me to achieve new milestones in my scientific career. And finally, I can attract attention to my data and possibly help people to be well.”

The 2008 finalists will be honored and five winners will be announced at the New York Academy of Sciences’ fifth annual Science and the City Gala in November 2008.
