Accessibility Awareness for Everyone

SUNY Downstate is at a critical point in ensuring our digital environment meets the highest standards of inclusion and compliance. Under ADA Title II, the digital content we create—including the emails we send, the PDFs we post, and the web pages we manage—must be accessible to every member of our community. This training is designed to build a shared foundation of understanding across the university, ensuring that as we teach, communicate, and deliver care, we do so without barriers.

Accessibility Awareness for Everyone is a two-hour virtual session that moves beyond theory to show the real-world impact of digital inclusion. The web offers a myriad of experiences, and this course provides a platform to witness firsthand how individuals with disabilities navigate that landscape through personal narratives and lived experience.

What to Expect

Through storytelling, personas, and live interaction, we explore the human side of digital technology. You will see exactly how accessibility (or a lack thereof) impacts the user journey and start to recognize where barriers show up in daily digital work.

The session includes:

  • Live Demonstrations: Watch a trainer use assistive technology to navigate the web in real-time, highlighting what works and where barriers appear.
  • Lived Experience: Engage with disability topics through storytelling and personas that illustrate the importance of an accessible campus.
  • Strategic Engagement: Participate in hands-on exercises designed for strategic application and analysis.
  • Interactive Q&A: A dedicated opportunity to ask questions and deepen your comprehension of digital accessibility.
