New mandatory training for all HealthStream explainer

By Office of Human Resources | Jul 24, 2025

To maintain our good standing as a publicly-funded institution, SUNY Downstate requires all state-paid employees to take a variety of mandatory HR trainings each year, in addition to each department’s role-specific trainings.

We acknowledge this can be confusing at times. To provide clarity, below you’ll find an overview of the four mandatory HR trainings that are now live in HealthStream, including the brand new one:

Gender-Based Violence (Prevention of Domestic Violence)

  • Training is called “Gender-Based Violence and the Workplace - Policy Training (HR)”
  • This is the newest mandatory training, and was recently launched
  • Due for all state-paid employees once per year.
  • Due within 45 days of hire.
  • The course is self-paced online, and takes about 15 minutes to complete.
  • Be sure to click the second module. It’s a short Gender-Based Violence Quiz.
You must get at least 3 of 5 questions right in order to pass the quiz and get credit for training.

ADA (How to request a Reasonable Accommodation)

  • Training is called “Understanding the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (HR)”
  • Due within 90 days of start date.
  • Due for all state-paid employees once every three years.
  • The course is self-paced online, and takes about 15 minutes to complete.
  • Be sure to click the second module. It’s a short ADA Quiz. You must get at least 5 of 7 questions right in order to pass the quiz and get credit for training.

Title VI (Prevention of Racial Discrimination)

  • Training is called “Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (SUNY / HR)”
  • Due for all state-paid employees within 30 days of hire
  • This is a one-time training
  • The course is self-paced online, and takes about 30 minutes to complete.
  • Be sure to click the second module. It’s a short Title VI Quiz, and you must get a score of 70% to pass the quiz and get credit for training.

Ethics Refresher (Shorter Ethics training, only for those eligible)

  • Training is called “Mandatory CETC Ethics Training Refresher (HR).”
  • Due for all state-paid employees on alternating years, opposite live CETC training.
  • The course is self-paced online, and takes about 45 minutes to complete.
  • Audio playback cannot be paused, so please set aside time for uninterrupted learning.
  • **Not everyone is eligible for the Ethics Refresher**
  • To be eligible for this training, you must have already completed Live Ethics training in 2024 or the first half of 2025.
  • For live training, COELIG offers dozens of Live Ethics trainings online every month at this link.
