GuillenCongratulations to Christina Guillén, M.D., FAAP, on her appointment as Interim Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics, effective July 1, 2025.

A proud alumna of SUNY Downstate, Dr. Guillén exemplifies the best of our institution, blending academic excellence, compassionate care, and a steadfast commitment to equity and advocacy. Her career is a powerful reflection of service as a clinician, educator, and a leader who transforms systems and uplifts communities.

Dr. Guillén earned her master’s in Biology with a focus in Neuroscience and Physiology from CUNY City College before coming to Downstate to pursue her medical degree. She completed both her residency in pediatrics and her chief residency at Downstate/Kings County Hospital Center, earning the “Downstate Lifer” moniker. Her leadership has grown at Downstate, where she is the Program Director of the Pediatric Residency Program, Vice Chair of Education, and GME Associate Designated Institutional Official (ADIO) of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

A passionate advocate for child health and medical education, Dr. Guillén serves as the Director of the Pediatric Community Advocacy Division.  Upon completion of the Harvard Macy Institute Program for Educators in Health Professions she developed and implemented a Health Disparities curriculum for pediatric residents. Her work is deeply rooted in the Brooklyn community and elevated by national recognition. As a SUNY Hispanic Leadership Institute Fellow she brings local impact and national perspective to this critical new role.

Her many honors, including the Dr. Dale Blackstock Award in Mentoring and Community Service and the Outstanding Performance in Graduate Medical Education Award, reflect a career built on purpose, impact, and excellence.

Dr. Guillén’s appointment is a celebration of her achievements and a continuation of Downstate’s tradition of cultivating homegrown leaders who shape the future of healthcare. We are thrilled to see her take this next step and are confident in the vision and heart she will bring to the department.

This transition also marks the well-earned retirement of Stephen Wadowski, M.D., FAAP, whose decades of distinguished service leave an indelible mark on both the Department of Pediatrics and the College of Medicine. A dedicated mentor, educator, and pediatrician, Dr. Wadowski has guided countless trainees and championed quality care throughout his career. We extend our heartfelt gratitude for his leadership and lasting contributions.

Please congratulate Dr. Guillén and extend our full support as she steps into this important role. The future of Pediatrics at Downstate is in excellent hands!
