In observance of Muslim American Heritage Month, we proudly feature Amal Amar-Alattaby, DM, CNM, OBGYN NP, a clinician, educator, and advocate whose work continues to shape women’s healthcare
in powerful and deeply personal ways.
A Palestinian refugee and practicing Muslim, Dr. Amar-Alattaby brings nearly two decades of clinical experience to her roles as a Certified Nurse Midwife, Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, and Clinical Assistant Professor at Downstate. Her intersectional identity, as a woman of color, a Muslim American, and a leader in midwifery, has informed a career built on cultural competency, evidence-based care, and community engagement.
Dr. Amar-Alattaby earned her MS from Stony Brook University and a Doctorate in Midwifery from Jefferson University. Her professional journey has included leadership roles in both private and public health settings across New York, including serving as Director of Midwifery and Advanced Practice Nursing in Women’s Health at NYU Langone Brooklyn Hospital.
At Downstate, she oversees clinical sites and teaches courses in antepartum care, reproductive health, healthcare policy, and midwifery management, ensuring the next generation of midwives are clinically prepared and culturally responsive. She is also deeply involved in Brooklyn’s Arab-speaking communities, leading outreach and maternal health education focusing on breastfeeding support and holistic care.
Her commitment to culturally aligned, patient-centered care is especially impactful in labor and delivery, where trust and shared understanding are paramount. For many of her patients, being cared for by a provider who shares their faith, language, and values makes all the difference.
In 2020, Dr. Amar-Alattaby was recognized with the American College of Nurse Midwives Outstanding Preceptor Award, honoring her clinical mentorship and education excellence.
Her story is a testament to the power of faith, representation, and service in advancing health equity. Dr. Amar-Alattaby continues to inspire through her leadership in midwifery, advocacy for underserved communities, and unwavering commitment to lifting others as she leads.
