Kings County Hospital Center

The Division of Trauma Surgery and Critical Care provides complete surgical care for trauma patients and other critically ill patients within central Brooklyn.

Patients are cared for at Kings County Hospital Center, a level 1 trauma center with recently renovated facilities featuring a state of the art dedicated Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU).

Our residents are exposed to a wide range of trauma and acute care surgery cases. We see on average greater than 3500 patients a year, with more than 1200 trauma activations, of which 17% are penetrating trauma. Residents are heavily involved in perioperative and post operative care, and gain invaluable autonomy in complex trauma care.

Residents also spend time in the busy Surgical Intensive Care Unit: a 20-bed, closed unit that is split between the Surgical ICU team and the Neurocritical Care team. A comprehensive multidisciplinary approach is utilized to care for critically ill patients from many services, including General Surgery, Trauma, Thoracic, Surgical oncology, ENT, OMFS, Urology, Ob-Gyn, Neurosurgery, and Orthopedics patients.

Additionally, there are a variety of clinical and outcomes research opportunities available through the department, allowing for the academic development of our trainees, with one-to-one mentorship opportunities provided by our surgical faculty. Our residents have consistently presented their work in national and international trauma and surgical conferences.
