Pedaitric Pulmonology Fellowship

Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship program at SUNY Downstate Medical Center was established in the early 1980's and many excellent pediatric pulmonologists have graduated from this program. The Pediatric Pulmonology Division consists of four full time faculties, two fellows in training, one part time faculty member, two pulmonary function/sleep laboratory technicians, two physician's assistants, an education coordinator and two part time pediatricians. It is an ACGME-approved three year subspecialty training program commencing upon the completion of residency training. Over the course of the fellowship, fellows spend an equal amount of time in research and clinical experiences.

The division has always excelled in clinical care and teaching complimented by an ongoing contribution to peer reviewed clinical research, mainly in areas of tuberculosis, asthma, obesity, obstructive apnea, physiological assessment of respiratory dysfunction and studies of metabolism (direct calorimetry). Fellows have made consistent contributions with presentations of their research work, at major national meetings including annual meetings of the American Thoracic Society and Pediatric Academic Societies. Graduating fellows from the program routinely become certified in Pediatric Pulmonology by the American Board of Pediatrics.

The Division currently provides care for infants, children, and adolescents with a variety of pulmonary diseases including asthma, apnea, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, tuberculosis, and airway anomalies, obesity related respiratory illnesses, in addition to other acute and chronic lung diseases. The Division oversees a state of the art pulmonary function laboratory that is capable of performing spirometry, body plethysmography, methacholine challenge, metabolic studies, impedance oscillometry, infant and toddler lung function testing, comprehensive pediatric cardiopulmonary exercise and stress testing and exhaled nitric oxide measurement in children and adolescents. In addition, the division has a sleep laboratory and an active laryngoscopy/bronchoscopy service.

The Division provides consultative services at the Children's Hospital at Downstate, King's County Hospital Center, and serves as a resource for private practitioners. Outpatient activities include the Pediatric Asthma Center of Excellence, a comprehensive asthma management program for Brooklyn's children, the interdisciplinary Pediatric Aerodigestive Program at UHB, Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Apnea Clinic at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and clinics at Kings County Hospital Center in Pediatric Pulmonology (Chest and OSA Clinic) as well as a Pediatric Asthma Center at King County Hospital Center.

Application Process is through ERAS and the pediatric specialties match of the NRMP.  Application deadline is Oct. 30 the year before fellowship program commences.
