Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship
About the Fellowship
Our ACGME accredited pediatric endocrinology fellowship program is an exciting opportunity for pediatricians interested in training in endocrinology. The fellowship is a three-year program with emphasis on clinical care and research. The program runs several state-of-the-art practices and clinics at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University and affiliated Kings County Hospital Center that provide an unparalleled access to a breadth of pathology in endocrinology, pediatric diabetes, and weight management. The clinical facilities are staffed by dedicated and board-certified pediatric endocrinologists, pediatric endocrine nurse, diabetes-educators, nurses, registered dieticians, and social workers. With interdisciplinary approach, individualized and patient-centered care is provided to our patients with diabetes and other chronic endocrine disorders. We are also a NYS designated Endocrine Specialty Center for congenital hypothyroidism and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Specialized endocrine stimulation tests are performed on a routine basis. The program conducts didactic activities including a board review course, covering The American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) content outline of pediatric endocrinology and up-to-date medical information, weekly journal club, and fellows' conference. We provide training in research methodology, study design, statistics, ethics, IRB application, and grant writing. We have had a highly successful research program involving diabetes, obesity, growth, puberty, thyroid disorders, and adrenal disorders. Current research projects include the studies of effects of diabetes and obesity on endothelial function, differences of metabolically healthy and unhealthy obese children and adolescent, effects of vitamin D on the course of autoimmune thyroiditis, and validity of screening for celiac disease and autoimmune thyroiditis in children with type 1 diabetes. The first year of the program is dedicated to clinical training in pediatric endocrinology. The second and third years are focused on research training - in either patient-oriented or basic laboratory research. Fellows are expected to pursue scholarly activities during the training. At the end of the training, qualified trainees are eligible for Pediatric Endocrinology certification by ABP. Our alumni are very successful and have multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals, present their research nationally at annual meetings, and graduate to work in academic centers.
