The Department of Emergency Medicine is comprised of teams of dedicated physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals committed to providing medical care to the rich diversity of people in Brooklyn, New York. The varied divisions afford students the chance to experience all aspects of the Department of Emergency Medicine.
Residency Education
The Kings County Hospital / SUNY Downstate residency in emergency medicine is a medical school based, academic program that is committed to training competent and compassionate physicians who can manage all aspects of emergency medical care, and who feel at ease in the most challenging circumstances that our profession affords.

Student Education
We believe that leaders never stop learning; therefore we devote a large amount of time and energy to student education. Our residents offer assistance to medical students through advising, individual tutoring, lectures, and hands-on workshops. We consistently receive positive feedback from medical schools, thanks to our student-friendly approach.

Administration
The Department of Emergency Medicine at Kings County Hospital and SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in an integrated department unified in providing excellent care to the residents of the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn.
Kings County is a level 1 Trauma Center, a Stroke Center, and an asthma center of Excellence. SUNY Downstate is a transplant center, a cardiac revascularization center, a stroke center and the only academic University Medical Center in Brooklyn
Research
During their training, residents can become actively involved with basic science and clinical research. Our respected research department is well-published and has a national reputation for excellence. Faculty members have also authored or co-authored major medical textbooks such as: Atlas of Pediatrics by Dr. Binita Shah, and Greenberg's Text Atlas of Emergency Medicine, co-authored by Dr. Mark Silverberg.

Ultrasound
Kings County Hospital's EM and EM/IM residencies include extensive time performing ultrasound. Residents devote several weeks of specialized training and work with state-of-the-art equipment. Dedicated faculty members supervise residents to ensure achievement of the ACEP/SAEM competencies.
BLS - ACLS - PALS Training
At the SUNY Downstate/KCH ECC-CTC we provide monthly Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and even more frequent Basic Life Support and Automated External Defibrillator (BLS/AED) Courses for health care providers and the community at large.
International EM
The International Division promotes the advancement of emergency medicine through educational collaboration. The division supports the goal of specific training in emergency medicine as a unique, independent discipline and is working to help other countries obtain specialty recognition. The division recognizes cultural differences and seeks to adapt our emergency medicine models to each unique project partnership.

Disaster Response
Our emergency department is one of the leading disaster preparedness hospital centers in both New York City and New York State, receiving major federal grants for bioterrorism preparedness.

Sexual Assault Response Team
The KCH Rape Crisis Program is modeled after the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) model. Our team consists of the triage nurse, sexual assault examiner, social worker, law enforcement personnel, and the Emergency Department Physician. We provide timely medical and psychological attention to all patients who present to the Emergency Department after a sexual assault. A nurse or physician who has had training specific to sexual assault patient management cares for our sexual assault victims.
