Acupuncture for Physicians

TARGET AUDIENCE

The Office of Continuing Medical Education at the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center is offering a 300 hours educational program which qualifies the participant for New York State Acupuncture Certification. The program is open only to licensed physicians, dentists, and residents-in-training.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVES

The program consists of 300 hours of didactic seminars and clinical workshops, and will concentrate on the following:

  • fundamentals of acupuncture theory
  • channel and point locations and functions
  • concepts and approaches in Chinese diagnostics and therapy
  • needling techniques
  • patient management for the most prevalent conditions facing the practitioner

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this program, the participants will be able to:

  • describe fundamentals of acupuncture theory
  • identify channel, point locations, and functions
  • interpret concepts and approaches in Chinese diagnostics and therapy
  • demonstrate needling techniques
  • establish patient management for the most prevalent conditions facing the practitioner
  • employ acupuncture skills in their medical practice and be well prepared for study in any specialized or advanced aspects of acupuncture.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

This certificate program is open only to licensed physicians, dentists and qualified residents-in-training who upon graduation will become eligible for certification by New York State. The applicant will be asked to

  1. complete an application form.
  2. provide a curriculum vitae
  3. provide a photocopy of the current, active medical or dental license and registration
  4. Applicants who are residents are required to provide a letter from their program director indicating their status.
