Please join me in congratulating Jeffrey P. Weiss, M.D., Ph.D., FACS, Professor and Chair of the Department of Urology, on his appointment as a SUNY Distinguished Service Professor, one of the highest honors bestowed by The State University of New York.

The Distinguished Service Professorship recognizes faculty whose sustained accomplishments in teaching, scholarship, leadership, and service have had a profound impact on their institution, profession, and community. Dr. Weiss exemplifies these qualities through more than 15 years of extraordinary service to Downstate and a distinguished career spanning clinical care, education, research, and academic leadership.

Dr. Weiss joined Downstate in 2010 and has since transformed the Department of Urology into a nationally recognized program while advancing the University’s educational, clinical, and research missions. As Chair of Urology, he led the development of a comprehensive medical student curriculum, strengthened the Urology Residency Program, and helped position Downstate among the nation’s leading institutions in matching graduates into competitive urology residency programs. He is the Director of the M.D./Ph. D. program, where he continues to guide emerging physician-scientists in their development as clinicians, researchers, and academic leaders.

Dr. Weiss has guided countless medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty through research and professional development, earning numerous honors for teaching excellence. Students and trainees consistently recognize his commitment to their success, and he has served repeatedly as Faculty Marshal for College of Medicine commencement ceremonies. His contributions to education include mentoring students and trainees, shaping curriculum, advising future physicians, and strengthening the programs that prepare the next generation of clinician-scientists.

Dr. Weiss’s appointment is especially fitting as this issue of the President’s Bulletin also highlights the Department of Urology’s strong showing at the 2026 annual meeting of the American Urological Association. Faculty, trainees, and collaborators presented eight abstracts addressing some of the field’s most pressing questions, including urinary health, chronic disease, men’s health, and patient outcomes. As a senior author on multiple publications, Dr. Weiss continues to model the academic excellence, scientific curiosity, and commitment to mentorship that have defined his career and helped establish Downstate’s Department of Urology as a leader in clinically meaningful research.

Beyond his academic accomplishments, Dr. Weiss has served in leadership roles with the American College of Surgeons, the American Urological Association, the New York Academy of Medicine, and numerous professional organizations. He has championed excellence in medical education and residency training, strengthened opportunities for students and trainees, and remained deeply committed to improving patients’ lives through compassionate care and clinical innovation.

Dr. Weiss’s appointment as a SUNY Distinguished Service Professor reflects a career defined by leadership, scholarship, mentorship, innovation, and service. His contributions have elevated Downstate’s reputation, strengthened our academic programs, advanced patient care, and shaped the careers of generations of students, residents, fellows, and faculty.

Dr. Weiss will be formally inducted into the SUNY Distinguished Academy during a ceremony in Albany in August, joining a respected group of faculty recognized for exceptional achievement and service across The State University of New York system.

Congratulations, Dr. Weiss, on this well-deserved recognition. We are proud to celebrate this remarkable achievement and grateful for your enduring contributions to SUNY Downstate, the field of urology, and the broader academic medical community.
