SUNY Downstate Plays “Match” Maker
By Office of the President | Mar 20, 2023
Congratulations to the College of Medicine for another successful Match Day, as 188 medical students learned where, upon graduation, they would do residency assignments for at least the next three years of additional training in their specialties.
A whopping 75 percent of our medical graduates—144 of them—will remain in New York State to serve in communities most important to them; this includes 37 who matched here at Downstate. Ninety-eight percent of this year’s medical graduates were matched to residencies. Consequently, more Downstate graduates practice medicine in New York City and New York State than from any other U.S. medical school.
Top specialties among the Class of 2023 include Internal Medicine, 17 percent; Anesthesiology,
10 percent; Pediatrics, 9 percent; Emergency Medicine, Neurology, and Psychiatry,
6 percent; and General Surgery, 5 percent. The Class of 2023 will pursue residencies
in 27 different specialties.Top match institutions included Northwell Health, Montefiore, Mount Sinai, NYU, New
York Presbyterian, Stony Brook, Rochester Strong Memorial, George Washington University,
Brown University, Children’s National Medical Center, Stanford University, One Brooklyn
Health, and the University of California San Francisco.
Preeminent institutional matches include Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the Mayo Clinic, The Ohio State University, the Morehouse School of Medicine, Kaiser Permanente, the University of California Los Angeles, Yale New Haven Hospital, and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
I was proud to share this particular moment—remembering my match day from 30 years ago—the beginning of graduate medical education, where new medical graduates learn the skills to become fully-trained physicians.
Congratulations to everyone; we look forward to the success of yet another phenomenal group of SUNY Downstate healthcare leaders and professionals.
