Downstate’s Center for Community Health Promotion and Wellness (CCHPW) and the Office of Institutional Equity (OIE) organized a health fair at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Fort Greene on March 12, 2023.

Medicine and Nursing students—under the supervision of Betty Jung, RN, CCHPW Coordinator, and Carla Boutin-Foster, M.D., MSc, OIE Director—provided free flu vaccines, health screenings, educational information, referrals, and resources. Sarah Marshall, DNP, MS, RNC, Patient and Community Health Educator and Clinical Assistant Professor of Nursing, also provided educational discussions on breastfeeding and kidney health.

photoWorking with churches is one of the ways that Downstate can improve the health of the communities we serve. Health fairs help target health disparities in underserved communities through education and provide preventive and primary health screening services, especially in underserved and under-resourced communities.

Thank you to Nurse Jung, Dr. Marshall, Dr. Boutin-Foster, and all those who volunteered at this event, including students Emma Boden, Sukhpreet Ahluwalia, Bradley Amazan, Shannon Chen, Rythika Francis, Joshua Kotlyar, Alexandra Belzie, Ariana Otto, Kelita Waterton, Latia Skerving, Stephany Giovinazzo, Christian Martinez, Maya David, Vicente Marshall, and Melissa Rojas.
